Lincoln runner Bridget Easley never used to be that into thegear of the sport. A bare-bones running watch was enough forher. 

But as she got more competitive, she needed more precision. Howfast was that run? was it faster than yesterday’s? that run twoweeks ago?

About a year back, she bought a Garmin Forerunner 405, a modelof GPS-enabled sports watch. It gives her the details of her run:her mile splits, her pace, her incline, pretty much anything shewants. After a run, she uploads the data to her computer and digsin.

“It started out that I was just curious to see what I was doingon my runs,” she said. “Now it’s my training partner. for the longruns, it’s just me against my Garmin.” 

The beeping bully gets her to meet her goals and beat her bests.Easley is now training to qualify for the Olympic Trials marathonin Houston, and the gizmo has become invaluable. every secondcounts, and she counts every second. 

These super sports watches are a commonly used gadget forcompetitive runners, bikers and triathletes. “A few of them about had a heart attack,” Ringlein said. “Isaid, ‘It’s OK that it didn’t go all the way to 6.’ this hasstarted a whole new way of training, that’s for sure.”

Lincolnite Jerry Woodard joked that he’s in a 12-step programtrying to wean himself off his Garmin. 

“It came to every run I did, I was trying to beat my best time,”he said. “Some runs you just want to go out and enjoy yourself. Butas long as I have my Garmin on, that day doesn’t exist.”

Woodard still uses his Garmin, but he’s limited use to just afew days out of every week. he also uses it when he bikes. he evenuses it when he boats.

“It’s more accurate,” he said, “than the boat speedometer.”
